During the Great Depression and World War II, emboldened civil rights organizations engaged in protest, litigation, and lobbying efforts to undermine persistent racial discrimination and segregation. The long and well-documented history of slavery, Jim Crow laws, and racial violence in the South overshadows the persistent reality of racial discrimination, systemic segregation, and entrenched inequality north of the Mason-Dixon line. I really got a lot out of Hochschild's book and was especially interested in his mention of a conversation I remember reading about in another book (and it may have been "The Quest for the Dream.") It was thought to have happened between Wilson and Tumulty in which Wilson supposedly worried about what was going to happen to people's rights when war was declared. If people think political passions have gone wild today, they are totally unaware of how horrible they were at the beginning of the 20th century, which was way worse than the Vietnam era. The era was first brought to my attention many years ago when I read "The Quest for the Dream" (It was a book published by B'nai Brith) during the Vietnam era, which basically was during my college life. ![]() ![]() The fashion brand has been in some hot water recently after “Ye” - the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, who was once associated with the French company - fired off offensive statements in yet another online rant. “Jesus that’s just creepy and wrong,” commented someone else. With or in the unabridged Ross Poldark, much longer than any previous book and written over a much longer time, he made this astonishing and unexpected leap in quality - depth and thoroughness, thick realization of imagined world, truly suggestive and non-stereotypical characterization, and real subversity of theme. I stopped with Take My Life for around that time Graham became absorbed in a second historical novel set in Cornwall, Ross Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1783-1787 (published 1945), which lead to a long series of Poldark novels. Much has been professionally written about every major event in the history of our young country. We learn about the Revolutionary War in history class and most of us lived through 9/11. Who would ever pass that up?įew events in American history are as talked about as the assassination of John F. Go back in time, fix one event or stop another from happening, and you fix everything that is wrong with the world. It is a way to experiment with “what if’s” and “maybes.” It is also the ultimate power fantasy. The amount of research it requires into past events rivals that of any nonfiction. But time travel, while infinitely interesting, is difficult to write about. We all know the great classics: A Sound of Thunder, The Time Machine, Doctor Who, etc. There is a certain allure about time travel, even though it is far from the most widespread literary genre. As always, full spoilers are expected here. Welcome to 2019! In honor of our continued traveling forward in time, the first book review of this brand-new year is all about time travel into the not-so-distant past. ![]() |
